About the Author

Michael J. Weinstein, a 1985 graduate of Cornell University, never imagined creating a photobook until after he got involved visiting Holocaust survivors, in 2015. He credits a program of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, "Connect 2: Friendly Visiting for Holocaust Survivors," and Mr. Michael Cohen of Brooklyn, NY, with getting him started in "chesed" acts of kindness. Soon after visiting several survivors, he found himself out of his familiar Long Island surroundings, and into the heart of close-knit neighborhoods in Brooklyn, from Brighton Beach and Coney Island, to Flatbush, Midwood, Borough Park, and Williamsburg. He often found himself traveling up and down Ocean Parkway, where his Father, Uncle, Grandparents, and Great Grandparents lived. On his journey thru every Jewish neighborhood, he visited over 100 Orthodox synagogues and was truly amazed at both the familiarity and remarkable diversity. He expanded his search beyond Brooklyn to the other boroughs of New York City, first in Queens, where he was born in 1963 and where his parents and maternal Great Grandmother lived, and then the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where Michael lived after college. He went back to the Lower East Side, where his Grandfather and paternal Great Grandparents lived after immigrating from Russia, where they lived in "shtetls", small towns with large, Yiddish-speaking, Jewish populations that existed in Central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. With very few exceptions, these towns do not have any Jewish people or active synagogues and exist in present day Belarus, Russia, and the Ukraine. Although there are books about the Lower East Side, books that show synagogues long gone, and other books showing synagogues around the world, this book is unique, focusing on 180 Orthodox synagogues in the 5 boroughs of New York City: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. It is a tribute to the "freedom of religion in New York City and the United States of America".

The vivid pictures, the variety of synagogues in every borough of New York City , and the historical information provided with each picture are beautiful, fascinating, and educational!I bought copies for many family members , and I am excited and proud to report that each and every person whom I gave this book to ranging from ages 6-80 all enjoy and thank me profusely for this amazing gift.Plus, I am especially proud because I am Elisheva from Connect2 Friendly Visiting for the Holocaust Survivors who introduced Mr. Weinstein to the Holocaust Survivors he refers to in his book.

I have a collection of photography books focusing on New York City synagogues past and present. Most authors go into much detail about the history of the congregations. Depending on publication date and origin, accompanying photographs vary by quality, but many are of high caliber. .I am disappointed with Weinstein’s “Ten Times Chai”. The overall quality of photography is not very high. Many of the photographs are under-exposed, have poor color accuracy, and are taken at odd angles. The brief blurbs accompanying only a small percentage of the photographs really don’t convey all too much about congregation’s history..

The effort expended to search out and contact all 180 synagogues to get permission to photograph them certainly deserves recognition and commendation. Unfortunately, the technical and artistic quality of the photographs leaves a considerable amount to be desired. The lighting and composition do nothing to effect the impact of spiritual and esthetic beauty of these houses of worship. The cover of the book is beautiful and holds great promise for the quality of printing of the 613 photographs. Alas, my heart sank a bit more With each turn of the page.As a book that documents and records the existence of 180 'orthodox' synagogues, it's satisfactory. But there's no sense of grandeur or awe here. Certainly nothing that infects me with an appetite to personally seek out and experience the atmosphere of these synagogues.

This book is just stunning! Each photograph captures the essence of it's synagogue to perfection. The vibrant colors and incredible architecture of these houses of worship are not lost in the quality of these photos. I love how the book is presented by dividing it into each of the five boroughs of New York City, and the information and history provided is illuminating. The book is beautifully printed on high quality paper which allows the photographs to speak for themselves. This book is clearly a labor of love by Mr. Weinstein and a book that will be relevant for generations to come. It's an exceptional journey though the 180 Orthodox synagogues Mr. Weinstein photographed and a wonderful book to own.

I bought this for my father and this is the email I received from him today "" Thanks so much for 'Ten Times Chai;. Its a truly wonderful graphic record of the Golden Age of NYC synagogues as I have experienced them. All the more significant since so many no longer are being populated by a more right-inclined orthodox crowd that follows charismatic rabbis and prefers the intimacy of their oft-residential shtellers. The photos capture the high points of each magnificent structure and supplements with unique features that deserve special notice.Kol Hakavod to Mr. Weinstein for conceiving and undertaking this monumental project."

This has got to be the most beautiful pictorial of NYC Synagogues Ever put together !!It's simply breath-taking. It belongs on every Jewish (and even-non Jewish) coffee table inThe country !!! Once you pick it up, it's hard to put down. After finishing it from cover to cover, you want to go back and see it again....and again !!The author/photographer worked so hard on this book and he succeeded in producing an absolutely stunning piece of work. It's worth buying for even double the price. My hat goes off to him !

A simply beautiful book. The pictures are magnificent and almost singlehandedly tell the story of the Jewish people's resilience, following attempted genicide in Europe, and devotion as well as the enduring greatness of America, which allows for religious freedom and protects it with the First Amendment to the Consitution. Ten Times Chai is not only informative but inspiring.

Beautiful and moving visual experience into the World of NY Orthodoxy. Terrific pictures and a wonderfully written introduction comprise this vivid portrayal of Synagogues in the NY area. This book would make a fabulous gift and would surely delight any recipient - at any level of religious commitment. Anyone should be proud to give this book as a gift, and would certainly enjoy looking at the deep and inspiring visuals presented. Great purchase.
