Very disappointed. This author romanticized the madams that made their fortunes on the backs of nameless girls and women. To say they were such an integral part of the shaping of the West, as if they were some kind of heroes, is shallow and callous. I'm wondering if these girls who were little more than slaves, would agree. To recount the funerals of the madams were disconcerting as if celebrating a woman no better than a cattleman. To say how much she contributed to society lacks the understanding that her chattel made this possible. These women only cared for their property, so to speak, until they were no longer useful and left them to the cribs, streets and addiction.The romanticized rewritten history of the wild, wild, west is sugar coated. To think that these women, servicing more men than we can even imagine, is glossed over. Give us history that really details the lives of these unfortunate woman. They had minds, thoughts, feelings and 60 men a day who used them and threw them away is abominable. Any author, much less a women, who can't do them justice should leave the real history to someone else and write romantic fiction instead.
Fascinating stories of the lives of so many of the 'long ago' days and how these women made their livings are in this book. The book is a collection of the women who are in historical accounts of the 1800s and early 1900s, compiled into this book.Reading this book gives one a deep empathy and understanding and yet, amazement at the lives of these various woman of those times and places of the Early West. The women chose difficult lives and yet, in most of the cases, they chose. Only the San Francisco Chinese section tells you of the slavery and unbelievable lives young girls were thrust into by their own kind, the Chinese, yet, reading of the white lady who saved so many was fascinating, and heartening, too (The first Chinese woman to graduate from Stanford was one that the lady had saved.....)If you find the history of the 'Wild West' interesting, read this book. I gained a new appreciation for the struggles these, rarely, heard of women, went through, just trying to survive.
Not a book you will happen upon unless you are an enthusiast of the old West. The book was recommended on the trolley tour of Cody, WY and it did not disappoint. True stories that will hold your attention.
I keep noticing this book on the shelves of gift shops during a trip to Tombstone AZ, I saw it for sale in many stores and just did not buy it. So a couple weeks later I checked to see if Amazon had it and there it was, and cheaper by quite a bit. I do love reading about history and finding out the truth about the past and this book was very informative about the "Ladies of the Night" back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In the western movies they glamourize the profession; it was a very sad and lonely life for most of the ladies and their only means of survival. Very good ready.
I love these books about prostitution in the Old West and this is an especially good one. You get a feel for how those women lived, and why they were prostitutes. The book also tells of the hardships the women endured, some of the relationships they had, and how they died sometimes.
This was a wonderful look on how this aspect of society contributed to the history of the American West. Although today these women would be argued as detrimental to the overall growth and well being of the country Anne Seagrove explains the opposite. I would like you to take time and read this very interesting book.
Great book about the history of some California prostitution. Easy to read very interesting and well written.
