Review

"For this third edition of Learning in Adulthood we have paid particular attention to work published since the last edition of the book. This third edition of Learning in Adulthood builds on material in the 1999 edition, bringing together the important contributions of the past decade to our understanding of adult learning. While we have preserved important foundational material (such as a discussion of andragogy), we have also brought to bear the most recent thinking and research. We have strived to put together a comprehensive overview and synthesis of what we know about adult learning: the context in which it takes place, who the participants are, what they learn and why, the nature of the learning process itself, new approaches to adult learning, the development of theory in adult learning, and other issues relevant to understanding adult learning." —From the Preface Previous praise for Learning in Adulthood "An essential volume in adult education." —Choice "This book is extremely useful in that it provides an informed overview of issues related to adult learning. It is very readable, yet packs considerable challenge for the more experienced adult educator." —Canadian Journal of University Continuing Education "Learning in Adulthood's greatest strengths are its coverage of the learning context, theory-building within adult learning, and how social and ethical issues offer special challenges to adult learning. It will be useful to both experienced and novice continuing educators, as well as laypersons." —Continuing Higher Education Review

How does the social context shape the learning that adults are engaged in? How does aging affect learning ability? Drawing from a background of work in sociology, philosophy, and critical social theory as well as psychology and education, the authors construct an inclusive perspective on adult learning, guiding readers toward new ways of thinking about teaching, learning, and the broader social implications of adult education.

This was the assigned text for one of my graduate-level classes, Adult Learning Theory and Strategy with the University of Denver. What this book did well:As a textbook, it introduces a wide range of theories related to adult learning and development. They are not limited to classical theories, but also presents some modern theories still in development. As such, I considered it fairly comprehensive. The book itself reads quite well and is pretty smooth. What this book lacked:I was disappointed in how poorly some of the theory descriptions were written and explained. At times, they felt a bit rushed (see Gardner's Multiple Intelligence). For a book on adult learning, I do not feel they kept their audiences in mind very well. The entire book is line after line of text with no changes in the way material is presented. There are no graphs, organizers, or any visual element which might enhance the learning of those of us who are visual people. I do not want this to sound like a "no pictures" rant, but seriously...Finally, a solid reference section could work very well at the back of the book, such as a chart of those mentioned and their theories or a chart of the major adult learning theories. This could be more useful than scouring the text for random names.Final thoughts:Not terrible and it serves its purpose, but I would recommend searching for other options before landing on this one. Learning does not have to be a painful experience.

The book is rather dull and the structure of the book makes it worst. It is so boring that you can easily be distracted before hitting the next paragraph. The topic is pretty interesting but how they took a good subject and made it into such a yawner is beyond me.The authors go from this scholar to that scholar in this theory to the next. After a while, it seemed like they sat in a room and just opinion swapped and came to a consensus. The lack of empirical data in supporting some pretty political conclusions was rather obvious. As such, it would have been useful to have a good structure outlining the salient points and reference the data please. Unsupported opinions are better left to the lay media. As is, you have to read and re-read the content to get anything useful. And then you have to ask if there is data supporting or should you just accept as the truth?

This book exposes the student to a lot of ideas very rapidly and flows logically through the theories of adult education and their origins in child education. In my class, the students are supplemented with the primary literature of some of the key theorists- but without these additional readings you have a very vague idea of a lot of concepts but no in depth descriptions. The book is also very repetitive- you feel like you've already read the section but its just because its essentially the same as a different part of the chapter with sentences slightly restructured.

This ranks as unreadable. The majority of the book consists of quotations strung together, apparently ordered by the chapter headings. The presentation consists of pages and pages of text with barely a diagram or table to break the monotony. I am frustrated by educationalists who ignore all the best advice on presentation when they write a book or an article, and these authors are very capable of ignoring every means of giving the text meaning.I note other reviewers complaining about the authors' political agenda. I too found some of the material quite offensive in its revolutionary tenor. The references are sorted alphabetically rather than by chapter order, and I found it easier to use electronic means to find the original papers which made far better reading than the selective quotes provided. In terms of Blooms Taxonomy, it would rate on the "Remembering" line, with a small hint of "Understanding".

This book is a classic reference. The history and foundations associated with adult learning assumptions, models, and theories don’t change. The authors’s writing in each chapter is sharply knitted together with salient points and adequate scoping of the material. If it were updated with newer references, it would be a five star.

the best textbook I've ever purchased! I won't be selling it back til I finish my degree. I'm sure I will use it again for papers in other classes. Easy to follow. My favorite feature: the authors state at the beginning of the chapter what they will cover, cover it well, then summarize extremely well what they just covered. This helps me assimilate the information as I study it, b/c I see how it fits. And also if I'm short on time, i can read the summary and skim parts that aren't as pertinent to me, and focus on the more meaningful parts. The authors are talented at offering a breadth of information, and also offering their opinion and preferences. It's a good read.

This book is a required reading for a Certificate in Adult Teaching that I am pursuing. The authors are very detailed and the book is somewhat difficult to understand, but as I mentioned it is a required reading and I will keep the book after the course is completed.

A great book for the HR practitioner or student. Though this isn't the be all end all of books on adult learning, this is a good book that gives the salient points of and history of Adult Education theory. It is well written, easy to understand, approachable, and easily referenced. I read it quite often when I need my memory jogged on certain topics and find it on my bookshelf of important works in the field.
