Though this book is not nearly as inspirational a 'Man named Dave' nor as moving/shocking as his 'A child called It' or 'the Lost Boy,' it does fill in a lot of background of his adolescence spent by one particular foster family and his first real blossoming friendships. We learn about some of the major influences that help shape Dave's life and various role models who help steer him towards a grounded life.If you are interested in learning more (anecdotal incidents) about Dave after reading his first 2 books- this is an ok choice. Otherwise, stick with 'A man named Dave' and you will be rewarded with a fascinating memoir of this extra-ordinary fellow named 'Dave', a man who took adversity and extreme hardship and turned it into love, gain and inspiration.
I have the other 2 books. So felt like I needed this one as well..I started reading this and felt like he was just repeating what was in the other books. And wasn't getting anything new out of his story. I was disappointed and put the book down and haven't picked it back up. I'm sure I will give it another try.
I have read all 3 books A Child Called It, Lost Boy and the Privilege of Youth all in 1 week. I had trouble reading the first one due to the horrible circumstances for this poor child but I made it through. I had to buy the next 2 and have just finished all 3 today. What a powerful story of loss of a childhood, struggle of a teenager and finding the love he so desperately sought. I will now read A Man Named Dave. Congratulations of a life well lived.
This is the final story in the tragic childhood of Dave Pelzer. The book showed a different side of Dave's life than what I expected, but it was still interesting to see that he finally had some fun in his life and created a family for himself going into adulthood. I would suggest you read the other books before this one, to appreciate how much Dave has accomplished in his life.
This book is basically a re-telling of the time period covered in Pelzer's second memoir, with additional information ... some that happened while he was in foster care, and some while he was a young man. I found it interesting, if not compelling, reading.I guess what I would like to know is what made his mother turn into a child abuser. But I suppose Pelzer wouldn't have had any insight into that.
I have yet to read it but the quality is quite good. Looking forward to it since I’ve read Dave’s first three books.
Added to dads collection. Finished in 2days. Not normally his cup of tea..as far as story plots but he was completely immersed and couldn't put it down
This was bought as a gift. The person who received it was well pleased with it.
