I bought the Kindle edition to take with me on a recent vacation to Bali with my wife. It's darned near useless as a travel guide of the sort most tourists want, which seems to me to be a result of a combination of the Kindle format and the disappointingly useless content. When I travel I'm most interested in having a pocket guide that right up front tells me the primary do's and don'ts of an area, especially any health hazards (like never drinking the local water) to avoid, with tips on local language and recommendations for dining and tourist itineraries plus notes on typical tourist sights and attractions. I also appreciate some info on local culture and history. This guide opens with a series of essays by various people. These are mostly interesting but way too focused on details of religion not at all interesting in general tourism and not efficient at all for the traveler. You have to dig into the chapters at the very back for practical advice such as never, ever drinking the water. Coverage of tourist sights and restaurants was extremely ad hoc and limited. For example, there's virtually nothing on the famous Monkey Forest, one of the must-not-miss things to do in Ubud. My wife's printed pocket guidebook to Bali was far better. So, if you want some idiosyncratic essays on Balinese religion and culture with a hit-or-miss coverage of various regions in Bali in the form of idiosyncratic essays this is the book. Otherwise, skip it and get the Lonely Planet or other similar book.
I gave a try to the book after reading reviews. It was an excellent companion in our trip to Bali. Map and details are very convenient. You will learn all about Bali to make sure you dont miss a spot during your adventure. We had hotels the 3 first nights but last 5 nights just booking at last minute. I read book recommemdations but also check agoda website for more convenient prices. Book is excellent!!! Trip made in January 2017.
Periplus doesn't publish "places to shop" or "places to stay" or even "things to see" guidebooks. Others, particularly Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, are better bets on these topics. If, however, you want a solid, relatively short, well-written overview of the culture, history and art of Bali, you can't do much better than "Guide to Bali". Fully two-thirds of the book's 332 pages are dedicated to these topics, first in an island-wide overview and then by region and major town. The last third does a decent job covering travel practicalities, again island-wide and by region/town.The first two-thirds is why you buy a Periplus guidebook (the last third is why you don't absolutely have to carry another guide on your trip): to have a collection of two page single topic essays that, together, gives you the background you need to decide what you want to see and where you want to go in Bali. The writing is clear, informed and, more often than not, highly opinionated in a "been there done that" sort of way. It is fun to read and in-depth enough to be helpful without being overwhelming. What you won't find here are reviews of restaurants and hotels, thousands of stock photographs or sn overly optimistic (or pessimistic) view of Bali and its people. Rightly enough, you may get the sense that the editors are not overly fond of tourists that demand Ubud be an "indigenous" version of London or Los Angeles. This is also not a guidebook for people that tend toward guided tours and cloistered hotels, though it is certainly not "Bali On Five Dollars a Day".If I re-read just two guides on Bali before my next trip, this will be one of them. I highly recommend it for the travelers that like to know just enough to strike out and explore on their own.
This is a good cut above the standard set by the usual travel guides. I use a lot of them, including Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, and the DK Eyewitness guides. The Periplus surpasses them all, though I have to add that I have not yet read these others for Bali. I will read at least one of them soon and will not fail to complete this comparison. As for Periplus, though it was published in 2005, the value is in the commentaries on Balinese history and culture, which will not have changed much. Chapters devoted to each aspect of these topics comprise the first quarter of the book, then followed by chapters devoted to the different regions of the island. Chapters are short and easily digestible; writing is very good and clear. Discussion of points of interest are also very well done. All parts of the book contain beautiful photos which, as a photographer, I appreciate very much. The maps are also good and sufficiently detailed. Since my own lodging is already arranged I did not pay any attention to the recommendations on accommodation and restaurants in the back of the book, and a traveler would want to consult more up-to-date info on these topics. But as an introduction to Balinese history, culture, and points of interest, Periplus does a superb job.
I originally bought the Kindle version but soon discovered that most of the maps are unreadable in the digital version of the book (whether in a handheld device or even a 27" monitor). So I returned the Kindle version and ordered the paper version instead. From what I've read in the book so far, this is very informative and useful and I am looking forward to diving into it.Will update this review when I have don that.
I read this guide along with The rough guide to Bali and Lombok, from Rough Guides and the Periplus guide is quite good. It has a lot of history of the places that will get you in a different mood when you visit them. The places to stay and eat are pretty much resolved with phone apps and a local mobile plan (in Bali is cheap and easy to get a prepaid SIM card) but the guide will save you time in your quest. After visiting Bali, this guide covers 90% of the stuff you can do. The other 10% will always remain to other travelers and locals knowledge. Good buy.
