“Shakespeare’s Sonnets Retold†is James Anthony’s attempt to “reflect the hidden meanings in a relevant modern way.†In his “reinterpretation†of the Sonnets, the author followed the standard rendering according to which the first seventeenth sonnets are understood as the Procreation Sonnets, i.e., each one “urges the young man to have children.†The following sonnets, 18 to 126, are assumed to be “all poems to a young man (commonly called the Fair Youth) with whom the poet is clearly in love.†Finally, “Sonnets 127 to 154 are more sordid odes to Shakespeare’s mistress, commonly known as the Dark Lady.†The main focus of James Anthony’s effort was to retranslate some of the Elizabethan words into modern English, while preserving a rhyming pattern and the Sonnets’ exterior structure. It is well known that Shakespeare was fond of ambiguities as a way to demonstrate that our ordinary approaches driven by intellectuality and emotionalism form a barrier preventing our minds from comprehending deeper meanings of our experiences. The above mentioned “standard rendering†is such a barrier: as long as it is accepted and blindly followed, it will block grasping the subtler meaning of the Sonnets. The Sonnets are a record of the interactions between two characters, the Poet and his Mentor. In other words, there are two voices in the Sonnets. First we hear the Mentor who appeals to the Poet’s conscience by pointing out how wasteful his life is (sonnets 1 -16). Indeed, there are references to “fair child,†“thou get a son,†and “your sweet issue.†At the same time, however, the Mentor compares the breeding of “another thee†to the process of distillation and to “increase that thereby beauty’s rose might never die.†A rose’s beauty may be preserved, because when it dies, its essence can be transmuted into the sweetest fragrance. This is a technical description of the process leading to rebirth, i.e., transmutation of one’s inner being into a New Man. This is a very different process from the natural procreation or re-seeding. It is a very sophisticated process and the only way to win against “Time’s scythe.†To be successful, the process requires the presence of a Mentor. Even though he is only able to write in “barren rhyme,†he has the unique skill of being able to “engraft†the Poet as a New Man. But before he can do this, the Poet has to recognize the Mentor’s function, his skills and be able to follow his counsels. The Poet’s exclamation “Who will believe my verse in time to come†in sonnet 17 marks his first appearance and his recognition of the Mentor as his guide. In the following sonnets (18 – 36), the Poet describes his fascination with his guide. What follows are exchanges of the Mentor’s counsels and the Poet’s reactions and responses. At the beginning, the Poet and his Mentor are presented as young and handsome men. But there is a distinct difference between them. The Mentor speaks with authority and understanding; he is confident and his counsels follow a precise developmental methodology. The Poet, on the other hand, is unsteady, immature, and moody. When the Mentor leads him through more challenging experiences, the Poet accuses him of treachery and unfaithfulness. The encounters with the so-called Dark Lady are a symbolic illustration of these more difficult experiences during which the Poet learns about the limitations imposed on him by his emotionality and sensuality. Yet, in the course of the journey described in the Sonnets, we witness how the Poet’s intuition and his perception gradually develop and expand. It is only at the end of his journey (sonnets 153/154), that he manages to overcome his emotionality. It is then that he experiences true Love as different from sensual love: “And so the General of hot desire was… by a Virgin hand disarm’d.â€It is impossible to interpret or retranslate the Sonnets without recognizing their inner structure. Shakespeare’s Sonnets are like an incredibly complex and precise instrument. Even changing a comma in a verse - may completely change the intended meaning. At this level all Sonnets form a coherent narrative. The narrative describes the sequence of experiences that lead to a well-defined outcome: the development of deeper perception of the mind. Of course, not everyone has to perceive, accept or agree with this subtler meaning of the Sonnets, but any legitimate retranslation or rendering - must preserve it. In James Anthony’s “reinterpretation,†this inner layer has been erased. The author corrupted the Sonnets by flouting with the technical terms. For example, he substituted:“flowers distill’d†with “flowers have seedsâ€â€œherald to the gaudy spring†with “well set to raise a daughter or a sonâ€â€œthou be distill’d†with “to reproduceâ€â€œmake sweet some vial†with “go impregnate a girlâ€â€œI engraft you new†with “keep you in your primeâ€â€œyou must live, drawn by your own sweet skill†with “you’ll have children only you could make;†etc., etc.The outcome is a set of sterilized sonnets. The book may well be described by a slightly paraphrased comment by Holofernes, a schoolmaster from Love’s Labour’s Lost: “Here are only numbers ratified; but, for the elegancy and the rest, caret.â€
This was quite a bit of fun. I am no Shakespeare scholar, and while I love watching the Bards plays acted out, I've always found reading him to be difficult. I hadn't read more than one of his sonnets (I'll bet you can guess which one, it's the one everyone reads) before taking on this book.So why read it at all? Two reasons: the first is that I actually spoke with the author prior to the books publication and he is a hilarious guy, fun to chat with, and absolutely passionate about his work. The second reason is, like many people of a literary bent, I do feel twinges of guilt for ignoring classic literature, and this seemed like a good way to tackle Shakespeare's Sonnets.I'm glad I read this. This is by no means a "Shakespeare for Dummies." James Anthony has brought the language forward a few hundred years, true, but he has managed to maintain layered meanings, puns, innuendo, and beautiful imagery AND keep it in iambic pentameter. Each "retold" sonnet is set beside the original, allowing you to compare and contrast. Perhaps my faborite part about this book is that by reading them together, I find it much easier to parse the content of the original sonnets. By putting the verses in more modern (though not simple) speech, the originals become much more accessible to the average reader. So, if you love the bard, or feel as though you should be reading more of humanity's great works, this is a great way to take a wade in Elizabethan literary waters. I promise you'll have fun with this book, and come out of it with both a greater appreciation of Shakespeare's writing, and of how freaking difficult it must be to write poetry in this fashion!
This is a BRILLIANT book. i’m in love with it. it’s perfect for anyone. it brings back shakespeare in the best way.
This book makes Shakespeare's sonnets spring back to new life with its side-by-side versions.Very well written.
Shakespeare's sonnets are beautiful pieces of literature, but not all that accessible to the modern reader. James has done a wonderful service for all of us to breath modern life into the classics and allow a whole new audience the joy of connecting with Shakespeare's work.
We all know the greatness of Shakespeare's sonnets. Now add side by side modernized language staying true to form and Iambic pentameter. Excellent fun, a nice read and I think it would be a wonderful teaching tool.
Fantastic work. English translated in understandable English!
A fun coffee table book that you can pick up and read in multiple segments or all in one go. Great for students and Shakespeare aficionados.Penguin First to Read Galley
