Don't waste your time or money!I've been hearing about this book for the last 3 years, and was ECSTATIC when it was released right before I needed to start studying for my AC boards. However, it has been SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!! If you've done a certification review coarse (i.e. Barkley), this is THE OPPOSITE. This book is written like a broad overview of all topics (and every section seems like the authors got up on their prideful-high-horse, and used it as a chance to show how much they know) as opposed to an exam prep. This should be a REVIEW - not an overall rehashing of the entire AC program. There are so many technical terms used that I had to look things up that I had never heard of (and won't need to know for the exam or practice). Also, there are several bullet points made suggesting things like "research now may suggest 'x' is the appropriate treatment of 'y'." We all know that it takes 15+ years for research to turn into actual standards of care. For the purpose of the boards, something either IS or ISN'T the right management. Another example of how the authors were trying to show off all their knowledge/research/background in the area instead of just letting us know what's to be expected of us on the boards.Not to mention - did anyone edit this book??? There are so many typos, and even notes within the text saying things like "delete phrase - edit areas....." Did anyone read this, or did they just rush to put this out to make money??I think this is a waste of time. I've stopped reading it, and am back to reviewing all my class materials. Considering my program has a 100% first-time pass rate for the AC boards, I'm going to trust the tried & true material. No more wasting my time with the minutia of this text. WASTE OF TIME & MONEY.
I and several classmates purchased this book for our Kindles and Nooks in preparation for our boards. I am unable to locate the self-assessment exams (as detailed in the description of the book). I can only locate the 6-8 questions at the end of the chapters. I have called Amazon 3 times and, unfortunately, have received zero help. (This particular dept @ Amazon cannot see the contents of book and actually suggested googling the author's name to ask where the exams are located.) Their final suggestion was to leave this review with the hopes that the publisher would see it and offer some assistance. (Amazon will not release the contact information of the publisher because the information is considered private). If ANYONE can offer ANY assistance, we would be VERY appreciative!!!UPDATE - I returned the Kindle version of this book and purchased the actual book. I found the bullet points helpful, but was again disappointed with the test. The final assessment is 200 questions; however, the test is a word document that you must download from the publisher's website. This is not a computer generated assessment. Some test questions are also repeats of the questions found after each section.
First of all... MISTAKES EVERYWHERE!!! How are we supposed to use this book to review for boards when there are numerous mistakes in the questions, answers, and let's not mention the poorly written rationales! I am constantly having to "fact check" answers, and usually left going back to my textbooks for the correct information.If this wasn't the only book available, I would have taken the previous reviewers' advice and STAYED AWAY. Honestly, you're better off with Reuter-Rice/Bolick (Peds Acute Care) book, making up your own flash cards, and attending/buying the NAPNAP ACPNP review materials and PNCB practice exams!
Good bullet point review, does have some questioms at the end of each section some have upwards of 30. The issue with the 200 plus practice questions that are not on the kindle version are because the printed version has a code that must be used. The fix for that is to call LWW and explain to them you bought an electronic version and you would like access to the pratice tests. I was informed to send them my reciept, which took all of two min, and they will add access to my "The Point" account. So this could fix users problems when buying the kindle version. Otherwise I am pleased with this book as a review.
The bullets are nice. I ordered the Kindle version at the end of August thinking it would be a great study guide, since it boasts 750+ questions. Which is sort of true, there are several questions at the end of each section. But it says there are 2- 200 question self assessment quizzes. They will give you the access code to the self assessment questions if you call them and give them your receipt, BUT they aren't available yet. Which means its ok to help review. I wish it had disclosed that the questions weren't yet ready. I'll have already taken my test by the time they will be available. So then I won't need them! Frustrating.....
This book is not how it is advertised. I initially bought it for my NOOK. The NOOK version did not have the 200 question practice exams and it was difficult for me to do the practice questions without seeing the answers. I ended up buying the paperback copy of the book. I did all of the practice questions, which I did find helpful. However, when I went to type in my access code to look at the "2 practice exams" there is ONE PRACTICE EXAM. The exam is a word document with the answers and rationales right below the questions. The PNCB questions that I bought were more helpful and were in the exam mode. The questions at the end of each section are nice. I was very disappointed in the description of this book versus the actuality of it.
I think this is a good study tool for the PNP-AC exam, however I did notice many errors (grammatical, editing, and content) while reading it and doing the practice questions. They need a better editor. Wish I had been writing them down as I went, I would submit them.
