Review
“Davies' nicely frayed lines and ink-and-watercolor cartoon illustrations create a perfect hybrid of bird and, well, nerd. Reynolds' gently ironic tone will appeal to elementary-age readers who face similar friendship conundrums-and who might draw confidence from Nerdy Birdy. Very funny and full of hope-and feathers.†―Kirkus, starred review

My Review: This is a sweet book that takes a fairly complicated issue of belonging and cliques and breaks it down for kids. Right off the bat readers see how Nerdy Bird desperately wants to fit in with the popular bird crowd of eagles, cardinals and robins. This elite group of 'cool' birds prefer to stay focused on their attractive physique and prowess with worm catching. They don't want to hang out with Nerdy Birdy who spends his time reading and playing video games. Nerdy Bird feels left out."It was awful lonely being alone."Finally Nerdy Bird finds a group of fellow nerdy birds who invite him to join them. They have similar interests and Nerdy Birdy fits right in! Readers may think that the story would end there but instead the book takes a bit of a twist and kids learn that having friends is a lot more than just fitting in and having the same interests. It's about being kind, including others and treating others how you'd like to be treated.Along with a great life lesson this book has wonderfully vivid illustrations that truly bring the book to life and adults will appreciate the humor and the references to popular culture which include Star Wars, Doctor Who, 'world of wormcraft', Star Trek etc.In the end this is a great book to broach the topic of cliques, sympathy/empathy, belonging and inclusion with young kids. The story is told with heart and humour and shows that it's important to do the right thing. Being cool or ultra nerdy isn't all that it's cracked up to be and trying to be a 'cool' bird shouldn't be the goal. Finding friends who accept you for who you are, who are kind and inclusive is the way to go.My Rating: 5/5 stars**This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I share hundreds of book reviews and my favourite recipes. **
My daughter is 6, wears glasses, plays Minecraft and reads novels. She doesn't always fit in with her first great peers. One of my pet names for her is Nerdy Bird. This book is adorable and made her feel like a book was written just for her. It's a tale not only of "finding your flock" and the group where you feel like you belong, but also being willing to go outside that comfort zone and find that friends who are much different from you also enrich your life! Mom enjoyed the little Doctor Who easter eggs in the art, because, you know, being a Nerdy Birdy is genetic.
I got this book in a book exchange and I'm so glad I did. My boys are 7 year old twins and they absolutely love this book. I've even read it in their classrooms. The story is cute and the message is so important, especially since my boys tend toward the lightsaber-toting nerdy kids more than the eagle.I think it's more important than ever for kids to know it's ok to be different and that everyone just wants to be treated well.Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.
OMG! The best! A new favorite for our classroom!! So many themes. I love how they treat differences. There's a "cool group" and a "nerdy group". Then along comes someone "weird"...
Have a great admiration for Matt Davies and am always in awe of his drafting skills. Did not know of Aaron Reynolds, but my grandson of 8 was impressed. All together this is a fine sequel to the first Nerdy Birdy and I highly recommend both books, as well as Davies' books about Ben.
This is a cute story with surprises here and there, our 7 year old read it in the school library and wanted her own copy. She was brightly surprised herself when she opened the present under the tree!! It arrived on time and clean and dry, no dents or packaging bumps.
It is a very nice story about finding friends and making new ones when you are different. Then it switches to the group of "nerds" not being willing to accept a different bird into their crowd. Now Nerdy Birdy must decide what he will do about being friends with a new bird. This should help children to realize that friendship has can allow for differences in interests and appearances.
This review is from my 6 y.o.Have you ever been teased or left behind? Allergic to bird seeds, likes reading and video games, big glasses, small wings - that's Nerdy Birdy, and she has no friends. All the birds around are cool, but she isn't. Will she find a real friend? With their colorful and funny illustrations, and simple language Aaron Reynolds and Matt Davies in their book Nerdy Birdy teach kids about kindness, self-esteem, and that real friends accept each other even if they're different. I recommend this book for children who are looking for true friends.
Both my 5 year old and 7 year old boys enjoyed this book, which we got in our Amazon book box. It kept their interest as it was a relevant topic for them (video games / internet vs. the real world!) and I found the story cute enough and would happily read it with them as many times as they want to hear it. I liked the illustrations and it was a good length for night time reading.
