As a owner of the 1st edition of Trading for a Living I was pleasantly surprised to see that the second edition is significantly revised and updated both with strategies and performance data. The mean reversion strategy as described sounds intriguing. Generally, the main reason I like the Dr. Carr's book (as well as all his previous books that I also own) is clear and concise but still detailed descriptions of trading setups and stock scans such as it is possible to start trading almost immediately. I give 4-star for this book because of poor quality of figures.
Dr. Carr’s ‘Trend Trading for a Living’ is a comprehensive guideline for anyone whose goal is to trade full-time eventually. It covers the basics of trading, technical analysis, psychology, strategies and risk management. Each strategy thoroughly covers how to build a scan in order to identify candidate stocks, example(s) and performance data based on five years of backtest. One can start by getting acquainted to one or two of these strategies based on what resonates more. Also in this book Dr. Carr takes us along his own trading journey which keeps the reading more real and organic. I think another advantage of this book is that the support can extend beyond this book by the subscription services offered (DrStoxx.com) which helps to see the application and performance of the trading process discussed in this book in the current market. I find this book comprehensive, clear, and actionable.
Dr. Carr is philosopher turned trader with practical recommendations on how to play price movements and read charts whole taking advantage of underlying fundamentals and sentiment. I enjoyed digging into his methodology and genuinely enjoyed the back testing of strategies suggested as proof points. While it's not a beginner's book in my view, it's certainly worth picking up to advance your knowledge of trading a strategies for limiting risks while generating big upside alpha.
The charts need a magnifying glass - to reveal that they are in fact useless.
I have been been trading stocks, Options, and Futures, since a very young man, and now at age 80 I still trade options with my wife. What I really like about Dr. Carrs books: Trend trading for a Living Ed. One, and this new one, Ed. Two, is that he has a way of giving you a series of Trading Plans, each one is different in that it fits different personalities so that almost any one can find a system that they like to trade. Once you find the one that you feel is "YOU', so to say, you open that chapter and he will go into it with great detail with examples so that almost any one can grasp the "How To" part and start trading the next day.The next reason I give this book 5 stars is that it does not leave the previous book completely in the DUST, but allows you to create a 2 or three book library, and even the first edition, written in 2010, and it attempted to cover different markets in the precious 10 years to when that book was written ...and since Markets repeats them Selves in slightly different forms, … and he did the same thing in this new book ... giving you a library of different markets, complete with a trading plan for each kind of mkt. … so the books are never out dated and valuable to you for years to come. If you feel more comfortable you can subscribe to his trading plans, ... which I plan to do as I am so busy (still work in my practice 7 days a week) and his systems are so varied, … that I feel comfortable to pick one that fits my style. Before I give any one five thumbs up, when I write a review, I picked up the new book and looked for some thing I might do to suggest how to make it even better, … and all I can come up with is that I would have liked to have a current up date on the systems that were in the first edition, "up dated in the current time frame" as I fell in love with and never got to trade it (too busy, one of the systems in ED one ) and a brief up date in 2019 would have been appreciated, however, that said, it is not enough to down grade and this is still a five star review.
Clear, concise and inspirational for all ages of traders. Being a young trader I was looking for a book to help me develop a system I can put into practice to help me understand and get consistent returns in the market. Dr. Carr is very clear and provides great overall advice on how to approach life as a trader and how to get your edge in the market.
